There's probably no point in adding to what previous reviewers have said about this exemplary English flake, other than to say that, if it were available here, I'd probably smoke it pretty regularly, even though I'm not usually a great Latakia fan. Both are lady-like in that neither will reward you with their secret dainties unless treated with dignity and respect. The tobacco smells slightly smokey, is moist, and wants to crumble naturally. I am excited! This is a superlative tobacco, one of the absolute best in my rotation. Share your knowledge of this product. I sorely disliked this "blend." UPDATE 5-01-13: This remains one of my all time favorite latakia smokes, what ashame it's availablilty has become so limited. Wonderful stuff. I usually trust his judgement anyway. The smell and taste in the mouth of these burning coils of cow sh*t is exactly what Penzance remindes me of. It's great tobacco through and through. Unlike most Aromatics that lose 90% of their flavor 1/2 way down the bowl, I even enjoy the last 1/3 of the bowl as it changes flavors. I must admit, I liked the smoke, a heavy dose of latakia laced aroma, that settled into a wonderful balance that made me savor it down to the dottle, which was as clean burning as I've ever experienced. Taste and smell are terrific (sweet and spicy), just as the leave and burning properties! Packaging: Bag It smokes abnormally slow, leaves a heavy mouth and your breathwell! Penzance is an experience but, for me, not one that needs or wants to be repeated. Doesnt bite. If you can find it. The same can be said of the orientals and the VA. ALL THE FLAVORS! From there, and until the end of the experience, there is nothing else that compares. I give it 4 Star . My conclusion of Penzance is that those beholden to it are just a little bit insane. Strange but it's made in Jersey and it's unavailable in the UK! It's too rich, while still remaining middle-of-the-road. Lighting takes 3-4 matches before I can get a good burn, and I have frequent relights because I try not to overpuff this tobacco. I must say I was dissapointed. Penzance came to mind immediately. Penzance is a classic, there's no doubt about it. So I loaded it up in a pipe and tried it and it was marvelous definitely one of the best Packers Ive ever had. Greasy, humid, leathery, yet mild and sweet. Very shortly after taking the flakes in with your eyes, you'll experience them with your nose. Although I normally smoke straight VA flakes, I found this an enjoyable change especially after meals or when outdoors. It just doesn't stand out near as much as I expected. This is nothing more than a one dimensional Latakia bomb. Contrary to researching and buying cigars by the box for walk-in humidor conditioning over months to years, reserving judgment to time and 'finish,' I am unfamiliar with the utility of flavor 'notes' divorced from a conditio sine qua non nicotine bass cleft. Taste: The oiliness of the flake comes through on the smoke. It's subtleties are lost on the after-dinner pallet, and this I fear has been its downfall. I give this'un 3.5 stars, but that doesn't really show up wth the current system. Like virtuous women, they are hard to come by, but well worth the wait. So this is the "holy grail" of English blends. Took to the flame fast and almost immediately started turning into a nice white ash. The one thing you will find is that it's difficult to find. It can be challenging to pack and light properly, so it requires some practice (I am getting there). At first the note is boldly phenolic, reminding me very much of an islay scotch, particularly laphroaig. Creamier than one might expect without being overly sweet. just one of those just gets better with age. I have read the reviews and spoke to My Tobacconist about this particular tobacco and have not been disappointed about buying it.This is a very Subtle and Complex English tobacco that has a wonderful Flavor and Aroma. The tobacco already crumbles when you shout too hard at it: Clan (from Theodorus Niemeyer) is the best tobacco ever!! It seems like the blend may have lost some of its vigor after 6 years. There were no more moisture problems after mid-bowl, and no bite at any time. Each slice literally crumbles effortlessly. In testament that this blend is unusual and can take some getting used to and that perseverance reaps rewards. I thought that maybe this taste would decline, but it only increased in its complexity. Just scored 6 ounces of this stuff and it is the most amazing tobacco blend I have tried so far. Since then I have taken the time to relax and enjoy what is certainly one of the best pipe tobaccos "available". It can be complicated but also plays well as a second fiddle if need be. With the understanding that there is zero, zip, zilch added flavorings this tobac is truly a blended masterpiece! Trust me , it's not worth it. It is full and rich enough to satisfy just about any English blend smoker. My mind was churning(it always is) and I kept thinking of roasted barely, but that wasn't it. One word of caution however, unless your familiar with a Krumble Kake type of tobacco, take heed as to the method of loading your bowl, simular to DBE, in that the bowl can be over packed! What was it??? The taste is deep; you know that it's there without it having anything much that strikes you as easily identifiable in the flavour - so there's nothing to get bored with! This is english pipe tobacco at it's best. In other words , a very balanced blend . I'd give it Five Stars if I could. The blending of latakia, virginaian and orientals is very nice. The tin aroma is unforgettable, but not the smoke. I hadn't touched Penzance until now. It's too bad it's so difficult to get. The most beautiful tin presentation you'll ever see, but thats where the good ends for me. Several other Esoterica blends have that same iodine scent as a noticeable component of the tin bouquet. Smooth, smokey and buttery. No it's not that. I'll make this review brief, as much has already been spoken for. I personally enjoy that type, though it's not an everyday smoke for me. It lights and stays lit very easily. UPDATE: I am now into my second tin, and only one word can describe this blend: transcendent. The bulk version seems to be the bits and ends of the kakes left over after they have trimmed, cut, and sliced the kakes to fit so perfectly in the tin. As for myself, to be honest, I can't say anything bad about this tobacco. The Cyprian latakia is smokey, musty, earthy and woody sweet as one would expect, and though it's not the star player, it's rich in taste, and is a major supporting player. If ever there was an overrated tobacco in the market, the grand old Penzance is one. I too had a hard time placing that scent. Some have compared it to Frog Morton:no way this is at a very different level and most it is not sweet-sticky-flavored as FM. There aren't too many Krumble Kake blends out there either, so just learning to smoke this was fun for me. The only flaws are frequent relights at the beginning due to the moisture levels and some gurgle. First, my own experience with Esoterica Tobacco. Perhaps this fact will one day fuel "Penzance parties", where tins are shared rather than hoarded in jars Update, 08-14-2022: About 3 weeks ago I remembered I had stashed a couple of sealed tins of Penzance, and I thought to check on them, Both tins seemed to remain sealed, but the older one, from 2009, was lightly corroded, so I popped it. This was a tasty and interesting blend. You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase tobacco products. I have a couple of tins sitting around in my pipe humidor for when I get the urge for this unique blend. If you are too heavy handed with the tobacco, you get a wet lump at the bottom of the bowl. 1000 and Old Ironsides. I stared at it for a few minutes, having the internal debate with myself. It was way better than I remember. All in all a good smoke. I'm glad I bought it and was able to obtain this because of its scarcity and fame and simply to be able to say I did it. This review is based on smoking pounds of this wonderful weed over 8 years. I also like mixing a little of this with some drier tobacco for a little Latakia spice that slows down the burn of a drier tobacco (try it with some "And So To Bed", which tends to dry out quickly). When tamping, do it with a very light hand. Do you prefer Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams, really no wrong answer. An interesting note is how the cakes are pressed together with a mildly floral sauce. Four stars, only because it is the max I can give it. Room note is that of incense latakia, but not very powerful. A bit of drying in the pipe and slow puffing rectified the issue. Something in this blend makes ur mouth feel cool kinda like menthol although in no way does the penzance taste like it, it's just the feeling, the way it coats ur mouth, it's just perfect. This is one of, if not THE finest smokes on the planet. A marriage of air-cured leaf and Burley with selected dark Virginia is hard pressed and aged to produce brown flakes with rich, dark undertones. Esoterica's Tilbury is a harmonious blend of golden and dark Virginias with small portions of Burley and air-cured leaf. The latakia never gets overpowering or outstays it's welcome. But I'll carry this tin in my pocket just to pull it out and smell it during the day. In my hunt for Penzance, I also became obsessed with finding a similar alternative. The flavor is very consistent from start to finish. This is the most enjoyable and relaxing English smoke!!! The Turkish leaf adds a bit of complexity but not an over-abundance of floral or sour notes. An added note to this review is that, since I posted it, I have continued to search for an English blend that might surpass Penzance, but have failed, even though I have come across some very fine near-equivalents, like Krumble Kake. When I opened the tin I discovered a rich leathery dark aroma that I can only discribe as heavenly. Was I worthy enough to partake of this holy mixture? This batch has provided me with some of the most heavenly smoking experiences I've ever encountered. Upon opening the boat the fines floated out everywhere. Old Ironsides is a monster of strength and taste, and Pirate Kake is very thick and full thanks to the burley. I have now consumed 6oz of it and just received a bulk order of 8oz. Provides a full, creamy and tasty smoking experience for the latakia lover. It is a full, creamy smoke with a Latakia dominant flavor. On more aged samples, the tin had an almost rotten sweetness to it. In my opinion, this is the best English available on the market. This is one of THE most foulest tobacco's you could ever not want to try. The market drives the price and not all of us can afford things that drive up the price. It crumbles great, burns cool and even, and leaves an incredibly white and pure ash. This tobacco has a 3 star rating overall at the time of this review, but it's a 4 star tobacco for sure. Seasoned pipe smokers who can not smoke in the vicinity of their girlfriend / wife, you simply have to smell it to get a kick out of it. I am a latakia lover (no burley for me) so this flake is a perfect second to my FAVORITE blend Balkan Saiseini. Just hope I can get one in my shopping cart before the supplies run out again. Before buying a dozen tins you've miraculously found, make sure you've sampled one tin of the vintage involved as you could possibly be in for a big smoking and financial disappointment. It has been a hard time obtaining a tin of this well reviewed and highly sort after blend and I was ready for a treat. Having said all that, it is top quality tobacco and I have no trouble giving it my full recommendation. When I?m taking the oriental route, I much prefer Balkan Sobranie. Thick mouthfeel. Although it's not MY number one tobacco, I am sure it will be to many. It's just not possible that anyone could not love Penzance. Opening the tin was a revelation of sortsI remember the first time I smelled Latakia, and the second, the third.wonderfully unique stuff. Seriously, though hard to find, it was worth the chase. So, is it a good blend? Nothing to say that hasn't been said 250 times already. Penzance is better at big picture than any other lat blend. My flakes were a lovely dark color with light specks and the sugar crystal formation of the aged virginias. I decided to go really loose with the bottom of the bowl and then to roll a flake up for the top. My bowl lasted nearly an houran hour of pure bliss. Penzance is my all-time favorite blend. The problem is, I only got 1 ounce. Only recently has Penzance and Esoterica had traffic jams and hiccups in production and distribution. The only thing that helped fight that horrible taste was a nice bowl of Mac Baren Mixture! Strenght is mild to medium. They had two 8-ounce bags of Penzance, along with two 8-ounce bags of Stonehaven, and I bought both for a total cost of $260. However calling Penzance an Oriental blend is misleading, it is a Latakia forward English blend. I mean of course it's a good blend, but there are a lot of blends can reach it after you aging them, not to mention the price and rarity. Literally, Penzance means 'holy headland' in Cornish (i.e. The Oriental makes up a very large portion of the taste, making it sublimely creamy. During my next visit to the local tobacco shop, I expressed my pleasure at my initial bowl. Is obviously not for everybody's tastes, and I guess it has too much hype running around it, but it is one of the finest blends I've ever tried. This might be partially due to my bag being 5 years old (not sure). I smoke Boswell blends almost exclusivly so this was very different than what im used to. Opening the tin revealed a waxed paper lining dotted with oil from the leaves. Penzance and Stonehaven are, IMHO, the finest blends made by Esoterica. I do recommend you to try, because I am in the minority, but in a word- bitter. I have tried some 60 blends( a relative neophyte, I guess). Lighting this up and closing ones eyes while sipping a tea and listening to most any of the classic rock groups from the 60s or 70s and I'm in heaven. I thought this just cant be that good and even tried smoking it over and over and still didnt get tired of it. I like this blend. I give it a 8 out of 10. After a brief search for some, however, I reconsidered my position. I'm one of those people that have notifications set all around the web for when Penzance goes on sale. I bought an ounce from a bulk container at my local B&M. either way is fine. The tobacco block itself measures about 3.5? Break the flakes up, but not a full rubout, gravity fill and perhaps a SLIGHT pressure, and it should perform well. Smooth, mellow-sweet and smokey Latakia rounded by age. My conclusion.the 2014 Penzance I would rate @ 2.5 Stars and the 1991 Penzance a true 4.5 Star blend. AhhPenzancehow I hate thee, let me count the wayssorry, I can't count that high! The tobacco lit up quickly, instantly showing its flavor and wonderful aroma. If you do not, then please be careful and have an open mind. For one thing, all the tobaccos claimed for the blend are of TOP quality, and each is present and accounted for - in its "fermented" form. during the 1970s. I tried to persevere figuring it would settle down a bit, but I was wrong. A great cruble cake style in slices. However, I prefer a blend of this genre that provides more flavor & strength.not one that offers a bland taste & a Latakia dominance. Even though I sipped slowly this tobacco experience, I found Penzance to still be too much on the strong side for my liking. And Esoterica has a knack for bringing nuances to its blends that can't be found in any other brand (well, except for Germain, but since they are blended by the same company, ).
